Video Transcript:
Many are so-called infertile because they missed this fertile period
They would have wrongly tried and been termed as infertile because they’ve not followed their
fertility period.
Ovulation is the most important thing in the menstrual cycle
This is the period or date where the egg gets released from a follicle in the ovary.
When a woman ovulates, it divides the menstrual cycle into two phases
The phase from the day the bleeding starts up to the day of ovulation is called follicular phase
That is the stage when the egg, or the follicle that carries the egg grows, and hormones are secreted. After the egg ruptures from its shell, or the follicle, then we call it as the Luteal phase – up to the next menstrual cycle, when the bleeding starts.
This is the phase when conception or pregnancy happens.
So, it divides the cycle into 14 days + 14 days.
The last 14 days is constant for all women,
So, if the woman had a 28-day cycle, the ovulation day is on day 14
If the woman had a 30-day cycle, the ovulation day is on day 16
So, the last 14 days, i.e. The Luteal phase is constant for all women
Only the first half, or the first phase, differs.
So, it is very important to track that because the days are not similar and what applies to one
person does not apply to another
And this follicular phase, luteal phase and this ovulation date can vary in the same woman also.
Every woman has to maintain a menstrual calendar
If you mark the dates then you will understand how many days your menstrual period lasts.
For some it can be upto 35 days.
So, that tracking is very important.
When you know the calculation of your menstrual days, then go back 14 days
How to be accurate?
We have LH ovulation kits, hormonal kits available, that are like pregnancy test kits.
It is the same urinary test, tested with two drops of urine that, like a pregnancy test, shows two
lines. If it is positive, we know that the woman is going to ovulate
The other way which is more accurate is follicular monitoring or follicular scanning.

We call for a trans-vaginal scan to detect whether the ovulation has happened or is going to happen.
This is used so that women do not miss that important phase, when trying to conceive.
Follicular tracking or monitoring is the basic treatment of fertility.
How does a woman identify that she is going to ovulate?
There are a few signs like;
During that time, just before ovulation, the white discharge, or vaginal discharge becomes very
watery and thin, so that the sperms can easily enter the uterus.
This is one sign to detect ovulation.
The other sign is that sometimes when ovulating, women may have a few drops of blood, spotting
can happen.
And some can very distinctly make out if they are ovulating on the right or the left side based on
their cramps.
These are the common symptoms.
Women have a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome where they have very long cycles or
delayed cycles, on and off.
The problem with getting a very long or delayed cycle is that they might not have ovulated.
Many women skip their ovulation in between.
So, if there is no ovulation, there is no pregnancy
So that might be a cause of infertility.
So, if there are longer cycles or delayed cycles, on and off if they are skipping
They should definitely the doctor to find out if they are ovulating regularly or not.
This is the first step in fertility treatment.
