The Great Attractor

A bizzare anomaly in the motion of galaxies across the vast stretches of spacetime. An anomaly that suggests a localized concentration of mass thousands of times more massive than the Milky Way. Unusual variations in the redshift of galaxies, indicating the presence of something massive.

Lying in the zone of avoidance, is the Great Attractor. The anomaly is observable over a region of hundreds of millions of light years across. Besides the usual hubble flow, the galaxies have peculiar velocities of ±700 km/s, depending on their angular deviation in the direction to the Great Attractor. Our galaxy, and 100,000 neighboring galaxies, are hurtling towards this massive gravitational point in the universe.

The Attractor is moving towards the Shapley Supercluster. However, recent studies suggest its location towards the Vela Supercluster. The central concentrations of the Laniakea Supercluster may also be responsible for it. Moreover, the presence of the zone of avoidance makes it difficult for direct observation.

Thousands of galaxies moving towards a mysterious place, which we call the Great Attractor, is truly one of the biggest mystery of today's astronomy.
