Building on its suborbital achievements, SpaceX is now pushing to validate the Raptor’s performance in space, with a focus on achieving multiple mid-mission re-lights—a complex yet essential requirement for future deep-space missions. To prepare, McGregor’s test facility has intensified testing, simulating the stresses of space conditions. One particularly impressive test involved 34 rapid re-lights in just ten minutes, underscoring the Raptor’s adaptability and reliability under strenuous conditions.

The next milestone for SpaceX is to replicate these re-lights during an actual space mission, which would be a monumental step toward Starship’s orbital and interplanetary capabilities. Upcoming Starship V2 vehicles, like the S33 prototype, will likely use the new Raptor 3 engines, bringing even greater power and efficiency to future flights. SpaceX has already increased Raptor 3 production, with McGregor’s test stand scheduled for expanded Raptor 3 trials in preparation for S33’s launch.
To handle these more powerful engines, McGregor’s test facility may need upgrades, including a scaled-down flame trench system similar to the one at Starbase. This addition would ensure both efficient performance and long-term durability of the testing infrastructure as SpaceX ramps up its launches.
