Stephanie Alexander established her reputation as a restaurateur. For 21 years her restaurant, Stephanie's, was regarded as an essential Melbourne experience and she helped train many of Melbourne's best-known chefs.

She is the best-selling author of fourteen books, including The Cook's Companion, regarded as an Australian classic. The Cook's Companion has sold more than 500,000 copies and is often referred to as 'the bible'. In 2009 she published The Kitchen Garden Companion, reflecting her increasing interest in encouraging Australian foodlovers to grow some of their own food. In 2012 Stephanie published her memoir A Cook's Life, an honest account of the challenges she has faced in her life and career.

Since 2001 Stephanie has been devoted to the development of a primary school kitchen garden program. Her strong belief is that the earlier children learn about food through example and positive experience, the better their food choices will be throughout life. In 2004 she established the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation of which she is now a director and Board member. There are currently 30,000 children enjoying pleasurable food education through this program and it is growing.
