Surprisingly, Icelanders possess a remarkably elevated proportion of Denisovan genetic ancestry. Approximately 3.3% of the "archaic DNA" found in the current Icelandic genome can be traced back to the Denisovans. This significant percentage suggests the presence of a western Eurasian population of Denisovans that interbred with Neanderthals. Archaic introgression from Neanderthals into modern humans originates from a specific group of Neanderthals that are linked to the ones that lived in Vindija Cave in Croatia.
