“Welcome to our studio in the Highlands of Scotland. Whether you are a painter, or an art collector; someone who is interested in the world of Elphen Chronicles or a collector of published works; or someone who is simply intrigued by watching an artist at work, we do hope you enjoy peeking over my shoulder as I work away at my easel.

The purpose of this series of videos is to share with you the unique Line, Tone & Wash oil painting technique, which I developed for my story-telling vignettes that populate the nine chapters of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’.

This particular series, which centres on my unique collection of Oil Painting Vignettes not only chronicles some of the work produced for specific chapters. We are also sharing with you some of the editorial and design work, which is crucial in arriving at our goals for the final result. This is what collaboration is all about and enabled me to understand Sunita’s thinking for the end result. From this, I was able to proceed with the Oil Painting Vignettes to accompany the story-text running throughout this book. In the Bonus Features you will see me finalising the content of these vignettes, prior to starting work on the finished artworks.

Then it was over to my easel and the first stage in these oil painting vignettes. For these I am using a technique that is unique to me, developed specifically for this ever-growing collection. There are five distinct ‘painting’ stages in the preparation of each vignette. But first I have to prepare the unique surfaces on which each vignette is painted.

Then, my initial creative thinking and working sketches have to be accurately drawn-out on the surface.

This is followed by the second stage, inking-in the linework with my own colour mix of waterproof ink.

For each chapter Sunita has created a uniquely coloured text holding-border and this is reflected in the third layer of my vignettes – which is an overall colour wash, unique to each set of chapter vignettes.

Tone, light and shade in each vignette is achieved with a monochromatic under-painting, the fourth layer in this process.

And finally … the full colour layer; which is where the traditional technique of glazing, sometimes tints, comes into its own. I adore these traditional techniques, which figure in all of my Masterworks.

These vignettes simply wouldn’t work as companions to the main Masterworks in this book, were it not for these rich, transparent mixes of oil paint.
