The "Host SMBus Controller Not Enabled" message in your VMware 12.5.x Ubuntu 17.04 guest is typically an informational warning rather than a critical error, often arising because the guest OS attempts to access a hardware SMBus controller that is not directly virtualized or exposed in the way the guest expects. To suppress this message, you can prevent the `i2c_piix4` kernel module, which is commonly responsible for these SMBus probes on emulated Intel PIIX4 chipsets, from loading within your Ubuntu guest. To do this, create a new file, for example, `/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-i2c.conf`, and add the line `blacklist i2c_piix4` to it. Save the file and then update your initramfs by running `sudo update-initramfs -u`. A subsequent reboot of the Ubuntu VM should resolve the message, as the module will no longer attempt to probe for a non-existent or inaccessible SMBus controller, without impacting your VM's functionality.
