In today's lesson we discuss Hapkido philosophy of values. This series is to teach us some of the reasons that martial artists should study philosophy. This lesson comes from the book, “Be a Life Champion: The Martial Arts Way”.


Let’s begin.

Values.

Philosophy generally states that having a sense of purpose and moral value helps to identify a person’s place in culture and nature. When applied to martial arts, the martial art values are what separate martial artists from non-martial artists. Do you respect your Hapkido teacher because he could beat people up? No, you love and endear him because of his values and his desire to improve the world.


Read a few of his quotes and you see that his sense of value in the world goes far beyond the dojang and martial arts. Values are key to success and self-worth.

Further exploration of the philosophical sense of values brings the martial artist closer to understanding their own values and the importance of maintaining good values in their martial art practice.


As Hapkido practitioners we learn that value theory involves various approaches that examine how, why, and to what degree humans value things and whether the object or subject of valuing is a person, idea, object, or anything else. Within philosophy, it is also known as the companion of ethics.
