The Warsaw University Library Garden is a rooftop sanctuary located in the Powiśle district of Warsaw, atop the University of Warsaw Library on Dobra Street. Spanning over one hectare, it’s one of Europe’s largest and most imaginative roof gardens, designed by landscape architect Irena Bajerska. The garden is divided into two main sections: the lower garden, open year-round, and the upper rooftop garden, accessible seasonally from April to October. The lower area features ponds, fountains, and granite sculptures by Ryszard Stryjecki that evoke cosmological themes. The upper garden is arranged by colour zones including gold, silver, carmine, and green; each planted with shrubs and flowers that reflect their names. Paths, bridges, and pergolas connect the sections, with climbing plants like clematis and Virginia creeper adding vertical texture. From the rooftop, visitors can enjoy views of the Vistula River and Warsaw’s skyline, including the Palace of Culture and Science. The garden is a popular spot for students, locals, and tourists seeking a quiet retreat, and it occasionally hosts concerts, film screenings, and urban games. Entry is free, and the space is pedestrian-only, with rules in place to preserve its peaceful atmosphere. It’s a rare blend of architecture, botany, and public space; an elevated escape in the heart of the city.
