While monsoons are an integral part of popular media culture pervading from music, culture, religion, and history, they also occupy a unique place in the pantheon of global climate, affecting a large part of the population's socio-economic wellbeing. In this context, Rajagopalan Balaji, a Professor and former Chair in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering (CEAE), University of Colorado, cited how climate catalyses social mayhem during his session at Ahmedabad University. His lecture introduced the participants to the patterns of rainfall, drought, and floods, their effect on the economy and public health, and the use of modern statistical techniques to make inferences about climate and society.

Titled "The Past and Future Variability of Indian Monsoon Hydroclimate and its Extremes – Understanding and Modeling," the talk was organised by the Global Centre for Environment and Energy as part of the Sustainability Seminar Series.
