Christopher Wise, Professor of English at Western Washington University (WWU), lectures on Al Hajj Mahmud Kati's "The Tarikh al-fattash." This is the third of three lectures on this text. In this lecture, Wise discusses the fall of the Songhay Dynasty of the Askiya or the "Sa'adian Conquest" when Moroccans and Renegade Spanish Christians sacked Gao and Timbuktu and killed the Askiya Ishaq, the grandson of the Askiya Muhammad. Wise also addresses the theme of sorcery, fratricide, and adultery in relation to the dynasty's decline. In addition to the first and second lecture on the Tarikh al fattash, this lecture is preceded by a lecture entitled "Sahelian Scripture" which addresses more general questions of Sahelian writing systems and the Timbuktu manuscripts.
