Google Home New Updates and Features For May 5, 2019

As we march towards Google I/O 2019, we know that Google's been hard at work creating a ton of new products, new updates, and new features for the Google Home series of products. We might even see a new branding strategy coming that could cause us to rename from #GoogleHome to #GoogleNest.

Google I/O is May 7-9th, and you should expect the following: a new product called Nest Hub Max, a re-branded Google Home Hub to the Google Nest Hub, a new device code named Zion that will act as a Thread Hub (and maybe be a Google Home Mini), a new sensor code named Castell that I believe will be an ultrasonic proximity sensor, and new Google Assistant Connect devices like we saw at CES. All this, and we still don’t know what will change with Duplex, languages, routines, and any other software changes that Google’s going to demo for us. It’s going to be fun, and come back later this week for all the news as it comes out! Google has also suddenly teased new Android TV hardware, and a new feature called Tiles for Wear OS smartwatches. Tiles, to me, looks especially well crafted to work with the Google Assistant as you can get bite-sized information on a small screen in a neat way.

Also, speaking of Android TV, it looks like the app store there will get a redesign, and that Google is focusing on getting more partners to produce apps, and then keep those apps up to date. Google will probably also have to keep Android TV, as…in a lot of ways, Android TV has been stagnant.

The price of a Pixel 3A could be as low as $399 USD (Pixel 3A XL at $479 USD). That’s the latest leak that’s come out. I don’t know if I buy that rumor just yet, but if it is that price…I’ll probably buy one of those.

Disney+ will support both Chromecast and Android TVs. That’s a big deal, and I hope we see direct integration into the Google Home (similar to Netflix), but no word there yet.

Google has struck a deal with Amazon to allow YouTube onto the Fire TV Sticks, but not the Echo Shows. While that happens, Chromecast devices will also get Prime Video content. Not sure I care, but some might?

YouTube Music will now come with an ad-supported version with every Google Home and Google Assistant-enabled device. You don't have to have a subscription service, just a Google account.

Your Roomba will need a reconnect right now if you haven’t done it since April 30th. Additionally, there’s native support for Rachio, Leaksmart, Flo by Moen, and Rain Bird have all gained native support within the Google Home app. You’ll also find your gentle wake up and sleep routines from Philips Hue are now available as scenes in the Google Home app. I’ll be bringing you a how-to video with Philips in the near future to help with that new feature.

The Google Assistant-enabled devices could get physical buttons that could be used for common queries. If I’m reading my tea leaves correctly here, I believe this will actually be some of the Google Assistant Connect buttons.

The UK government added 12 000 facts to Google and Amazon's voice assistants to make sure that the answers coming from the devices were accurate. We'll see more of this...and it just goes to help both Google and Amazon.
