HALLOWEEN CONTENT!

Báirín breac (barmbrack, or literally “speckled loaf”) is a traditional brack made for Samhain / Halloween in Ireland. It’s not only delicious to have with butter and a cup of tea, but it’s also used for divination or fortune telling.


Edit: Near the end of the video I do say that "báirín" means "speckled" when actually it's "breac" - exhausted brain did not catch this in edits.

There are many variations in recipes, this one is mine that I use to make this tasty treat.

Ingredients

225g flour (self raising or plain with baking powder - in this video I used Gluten Free Flour)
300g fruit mix (I use half sultanas / half raisins - so 150g of each)
250ml cold tea
100g golden castor sugar
Mixed Spice (1 heaped tsp)
1 egg (beaten)

1 shot of whiskey (optional)
Your divination charms


Method

To make the barmbrack you will need a measuring jug for liquid, a mixing bowl, spoon, and greased and floured loaf tin.

Preheat your oven to 200C / Gas Mark 6 / 400F

Soak your fruit in the cold tea, ideally overnight but at least for a few hours.
Add your dry ingredient, egg and mix well.
Wrap your divination charms in baking paper (or tin foil)
Stir these in well
Put mixture into your greased and floured tin
Bake at 200C / Gas Mark 6 / 400F
