If your dog steals things, runs away and guards them or becomes aggressive you need a plan to get the item back in that moment. Commands such as drop it, out, and leave it are great, but they probably won't work in the moment unless you have put in a lot of training time.

Once a dog takes an item to a crate or other secure place, they are very unlikely to trade with you. At that point you need to safely get them out of the cage and take control of the situation.

In this video you can see that the dog steals a bone, runs away and eventually gets to his crate where he guards it. The trainer uses a slip lead to get the dog out of the crate and then trains him for a few minutes. After the dog is calm he is able to use a piece of food to "trade" but the dog tries to get the food and keep the bone!

Resource guarding takes many forms and is different with each dog. Resource guarding could show itself as a dog who holds things and won't open his mouth all the way up to a dog that will attack unprovoked if you get near his food or bones.
