STORYLINE

Incoming European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and his 24-member team are holding talks at a secluded chateau in Belgium on Friday, to deal with the political crisis surrounding the portfolio nomination of controversial Italian Commissioner, Rocco Buttiglione.

Buttiglione holds the Justice, Freedom and Security portfolio but his publicly expressed views on homosexuality, marriage, single mothers and immigration, have been deemed unsuitable by a parliamentary committee.

Buttiglione says homosexuality is a sin and that single mothers do not make good parents. He also supports the Italian government's policy of deporting immigrants before they have a chance to apply for asylum.

Several political groups in the legislature have said they will oppose Barroso's team after hearing Buttiglione's comments.

A compromise offer from Barroso on Thursday to restrict the role of Buttiglione failed to appease opposition.

Friday's talks were being held in Arquennes, some 30 kilometres (20 miles) south of the capital Brussels.

The European Parliament is to vote on the new EU executive team next Wednesday.
