On March 11, 2011, Japan was struck by one of the most powerful earthquakes in recorded history-a magnitude 9.0 quake off the Tōhoku coast. But the real terror came minutes later, when a monstrous tsunami-with waves up to 40 meters high-slammed into the Japanese shoreline, sweeping away entire towns and triggering a catastrophic nuclear meltdown at Fukushima.

Nearly 20,000 people lost their lives, and the scars of this triple disaster still remain today.
