We originally planned to make hydrochloric acid without hydrogen chloride gas or distillation. However this did not work because the calcium sulfate dihydrate sludge formed a mass we could not simply filtrate in order to obtain conc. hydrochloric acid. This method can be used to make dilute hydrochloric acid by using way more water than in the procedure shown here (~7 times as much).
