Washington also claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to participate, though the Kremlin has not officially confirmed this. This has deeply unsettled European leaders. Many European officials are uncomfortable with the idea of Putin sitting on a “Board of Peace,” calling it a dangerous move that could normalize Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The UK Foreign Secretary said Europe would first observe how this board functions before responding. Despite the criticism, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged world leaders not to be cynical. He said international forums often become “talking shops” where nothing gets done, and insisted that this board is about real action, not speeches. According to Rubio, the top priority is making the Gaza peace plan durable and long lasting. He called the Board of Peace a “Board of Action,” saying it could become a model for resolving conflicts across the world. Meanwhile, another major development unfolded in Davos.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had earlier said he would not attend due to Ukraine’s energy crisis, arrived unexpectedly. His schedule was rearranged after it became clear that talks with President Trump were possible. Zelenskyy knows that U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff is heading to Moscow for discussions with President Putin. American officials say a Ukraine peace agreement is just “one step away,” though similar claims have been made before. Witkoff expressed optimism, saying negotiations have narrowed down to one final issue and are solvable if both sides want peace.
