August 24th... is Ukraine's Independence Day, marking the day it decided to split from the Soviet Union.
Countries around the world celebrated the historic anniversary.
But as the war continues, it was a somber occasion marred by violence.
Lee Rae-hyun has the latest.
The streets of Kyiv... on Ukraine's 31st Independence Day... were relatively quiet.
Ukraine banned large gatherings and events over fears that Russia could target them.
The U.S. had also warned any of its citizens still in the country to leave.
But in the other parts of the world,... people sent congratulations to Ukraine in their own way.
In Lithuania, a techno concert was organized by Ukrainian DJs to celebrate Ukraine's independence.

"People ask why we use rave as protest form or similar freedom. And I think it's very obvious when you see people dancing freely, expressing themselves that's exactly what Putin hates and that's what he's scared of. So, that's what we're doing."

Thousands of Ukrainians observed the holiday in Berlin, too, where there was a Freedom Parade through the German capital.

"Today is Ukraine's Independence Day, and that's why we are all here today, to show the entire world that we are independent and that we are fighting for it."

However, the 31st anniversary was darkened by a missile strike on an eastern Ukrainian train station, which killed at least 25 people.
The deputy head of the President's office said the dead included two children, too.
In a video address to UN Security Council, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned the country's invaders regarding the attack.

"We will definitely make the occupiers pay for everything they have done. We will, without any doubt, evict the invaders from our land. No trace of this evil will remain in our free Ukraine."

Meanwhile, fresh military support for Ukraine was announced on the same day.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson made an unexpected visit to Kyiv on Wednesday and pledged to provide further military aid... worth 63-point-5 million U.S. dollars.
This will include unmanned surveillance and missile systems.
U.S. President Joe Biden also announced 3 billion dollars in fresh military aid... to support the people of Ukraine who are fighting, he said, "to defend their sovereignty."
