Just who is at the forefront of downplaying the coronavirus pandemic? It’s the climate science deniers. We’re talking folks like conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and organizations like the Heartland Institute. They are actively downplaying the seriousness of this epidemic.


DeSmog is a blog that tracks who is behind false information about the climate. The blog has identified 70 individuals and groups questioning the deadliness of the coronavirus and trying to put an end to social distancing.

Bringing me to our slay word IMPERVIOUS – for unable to be affected by. What is it with these people who are impervious to the science for both the virus and climate charge. Do they have to drop dead before their followers will see that the virus is real and deadly and highly communicable?

The same influencers trying to make the public question the severity of global heating are also discounting the science surrounding the coronavirus.

John Cook studies climate denial at the center for climate change communication at George Mason University. Cook outlines five techniques of science denial that people should watch for, including the cherry-picking of data.

They are: 1. using fake experts - Presenting an unqualified person or institution as a source of credible information., 2. having impossible expectations - Demanding unrealistic standards of certainty before acting on the science. As an example: “Scientists can’t even predict the weather next week. How can they predict the climate in 100 years?”, 3. cherry picking information- Carefully selecting data that appear to confirm one position while ignoring other data that contradicts that position, 4. logical fallacies - Arguments where the conclusion doesn’t logically follow from the premises such as: “Climate has changed naturally in the past so what’s happening now must be natural.”. and 5. conspiracy theories - Proposing that a secret plan exists to implement a nefarious scheme such as hiding a truth
