Martin Luther famously described Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics as the “worst enemy of grace.” This has led to a widespread belief that Protestant thinkers rejected pagan virtue ethics, especially Aristotle's, confining scholarly commentary on the Ethics to the Catholic tradition. Furthermore, it is often thought that the entire Aristotelian tradition conflicted with Protestant principles. In this video, Manfred Svensson sheds light on the historical reality that this assumption is incorrect. He explains how early modern Protestants not only continued to write and publish commentaries on Aristotelian works but also considered themselves an integral part of an distinct tradition of scholarship.
