►Maintenance is the best thing you can do for your vehicle. Oil changes will be the most frequent task, but you'll eventually need to replace the spark plugs and ignition coils. Both components work together to produce the spark that ignites the fuel and air mixture within a cylinder, creating the horsepower and torque that we get to feel. Through thousands of miles of use, the plugs and coils will wear down, losing their effectiveness. Worn plugs or coils will start as a random misfire before failing completely.

Spark plugs and ignition coils can be easy to replace on some models, but the Cayman's mid-engine layout can make it more challenging. The biggest difference from something like a GTi are the amount of parts that need to be removed for access and the fact that you'll be under the car for the majority of the job. But other than that, there aren't any complicated hoops to jump though, just a relatively standard replacement procedure.

As mentioned above, this job applies strictly to the 987.1 Cayman and Boxster with the M97 engine. The later 2009-2012 987.2 models use a different engine with slightly different replacement steps and torque specs.

Wrench along with Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro's Professional DIY'er, as he replaces the spark plugs and ignition coils on a 987.1 Porsche Cayman.
