Coach Charlie Driscoll and Matt Genovese of St.Peter’s High School discuss Team Defense, Defending Ball Screens, and Help Defense Principles .

In the Team Defense portion - the coaches stress the importance of denying passing lanes ( 1 pass away) and being in help (More than 1 pass away) . A teaching point is jumping to the ball , especially on a pass down to deny the cutter a free lane to the basic. Coach Driscoll reminds their defenders to never be behind a cutter.

In the portion focused on Defending Ball Screens - Coach Driscoll and Coach Genovese stress taking away the middle drive by pushing the ball to the sideline & baseline . The defender who’s man is setting the screen calls “Ice” . The defender sits back and helps the drive . Coach Genovese points out they are more willing to surrender the elbow jumper than the drive for a potential layup. Once the defender who got screened recovers, the defender slides back to defend that player on the elbow.

In the Help Defense Principles portion , Coach Driscoll demonstrates how opposite side defenders should be in good help position , in the middle of the court. This is the best position to cut off any drives to the basket should a teammate get beat on a dribble drive.
