Jullay! My name is Tsering Jigmet and I am a metal artisan from Chilling village. Chilling is well known for its metal craft and the story of how metal craft came to Chilling village dates back to the era of King Singay Namgyal. After the death of his father, King Singay Namgyal wanted to build a copper statue of Buddha to honour the life of his father. For that purpose, King Singay Namgyal invited metal artisans all the way from Nepal to build the Buddha statue at Shey, which is now known as the Shey Thuba. Once the statue was complete, as a gesture of gratitude towards the artisans, the king offered citizenship to the artisans who wished to stay back in Ladakh. Many of the artisans stayed back and settled in different villages around Ladakh. One of them decided to settle in Chilling as he found all the necessary materials like gold and copper in Chilling to practice his art. Since then the art of metal craft has continued to flourish in Chilling.
