Poets jasmine/ Chameli/Jaathimalli or Pichi poovu

We hear a lot about the sambac jasmine varieties which typically bloom until end of summer. However, poets jasmine is a beautiful vining variety that has white flowers, a unique sweet fragrance blooming from mid summer and continues to bloom indoors during winter (Zone 8, Dallas,TX). Poet’s Jasmine grows quickly and has a strong resilient root system.

This is often confused with pink jasmine (Jasminum polyanthum)which blooms in abundance ONLY during spring and is widely available in most local garden centres/ grocery stores. Has a milder fragrance as compared to the poets jasmine variety.


Poet’s vs Pink Jasmine?

Given a choice, for Dallas weather, I would go in for the poets jasmine anytime as it’s more resilient and a repeat bloomer unlike pink jasmine. Usually pink jasmine can be grown in ground (Zone 8, Dallas, TX). However, by the time the plant revives post winter, it gets too warm for it to flower and doesn’t thrive well during extreme hot weather. In my experience, we don’t get to see any flowers on this plant once you purchase them from the nursery.
