2010 World Championship Nippon got bronze medal. It was 32 years apart to obtain a medal again. Thanks to Manabe Masayoshi along with Saori, Ebata, Takeshita, Otomo, Sano etc made miracle happened. 2011 rank 4th in World Cup and got bronze medal in London Olympics in 2012.
After Motoko Obayashi retired in 1996, there was no star in Nippon until Kimura Saori appeared. 2010-12 Nippon probably was the most watchable team after 90s. The speed, defense, tactics and jersey were all good. Backup players as well act as “2nd line of defense” to the team. This series aims to show you “how shorts beat talls” and how Nippon demonstrated the real spirit of volleyball.
Post-Match Commentary :
This was 3rd week match. Nippon had faced Korea in week 1. In my memory, South Korea lost to Japan in all matches in 2011. Including WGP, Asian Championship and World Cup. Korea cannot go to the final round while Japan still fighting the last spot.
Superstar #10 Kim Yeon-koung (23yo, 1.92m) was 2012 Olympic MVP even Korea got the 4th place. Before 2012, she was the only key player in the team without anyone to support her. Thus, Korea international result wasn't too good. In this match, you can see middle blocker in Korea were unable to score. Other two spikers also cannot be a threat to Japan at all. Their first pass was bad and no back row attack also. Japan used spikers Saori and Sakoda with support by Sano receive, Takeshita setting and two middle blockers protection, their form was streamlined with many attack positions. It was a very clear difference between first class level vs 3rd class.
