44. DIY Replacing broken axle gears

Note—I just got the November Walthers sale flyer in the mail and they have the geared wheel sets on sale now. These are for the Proto 1000 and 2000 4 axle locos. In each package you get two complete assemblies—wheels, gear inserts and bearings so all you have to do is swap them in place of the old ones. The stock number is 920-584408 and each package includes 2 complete wheel sets for only $5.98. Remember you probably will need two packages for a complete swap out on both trucks. How’s that for timing!

Having a locomotive that jerks and jumps or just sits there and whines can be frustrating. Unfortunately some Athearn, LifeLike, and Walthers models have axle gears that are prone to cracking which can cause these symptoms. In this video I'll show you how to find the problem and fix it yourself.
