Birdwing Butterfly Gully - Ornithoptera richmondia Complete Life Cycle

Описание к видео Birdwing Butterfly Gully - Ornithoptera richmondia Complete Life Cycle

The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly (Ornithoptera richmondia) is the biggest butterfly in south east Australia and one of the most beautiful. These magnificent butterflies can be seen at the Birdwing Butterfly Gully at Goonellabah NSW.
The Birdwing Butterfly Gully is an oasis for wildlife in the middle of suburbia. A path follows Tucki creek where Goonellabah Tucki Landcare volunteers have cleared invasive weeds and planted native plants for wildlife habitat. The Birdwing Vine (Pararistolochia praevenosa) grows beside the path and is the food plant for the larvae of the Richmond Birdwing butterfly.
An obscure midge fly pollinates the Birdwing Vine flowers and without this tiny insect the vine would not set seed and in time die out and the beautiful Richmond Birdwing butterflies, whose larvae feed only on this vine, would disappear too.
