On March 17, 1863, Union Brig. Gen. William W. Averell drove more than 2,000 Federal cavalry across the Rappahannock at Kelly’s Ford to strike Maj. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee’s veterans near Culpeper Court House. After hacking through abatis under fire, pioneers and troopers forced the crossing, igniting hours of mounted combat where Spencer-armed Federals traded sabers and pistol shots with Virginia horsemen. Amid the chaos, Confederate artillerist Maj. John “the Gallant” Pelham was mortally wounded, a blow to J.E.B. Stuart’s famed cavalry. Though the day ended as a tactical draw, the fight restored Union confidence, foreshadowed Hooker’s cavalry reorganization, and set the stage for Brandy Station—where the balance in the Eastern Theater’s mounted war would shift for good.
