Decorated war hero and Oscar-winning actor are a few of the many titles that befit Lee Marvin. His life was full of adventures that aren’t well known.

Lee Marvin joined the Marines at 18 in the midst of WWII. Here, he fought at the battle of Saipan. Saipan was one of the bloodiest battles of the war, and Marvin himself suffered an injury. His bravery led to a Purple Heart and a fleet of other medals.

After being discharged, Marvin made his move into the film industry. For many years, Marvin worked as an extra in war and western films. It was Henry Hathaway, the director of You’re in the Navy Now who noticed Marvin. So, impressed was Hathaway, he gave Marvin some dialog. This led to larger roles.

In his career, Marvin racked up over 100 acting credits. Some of his most famous movies were The Dirty Dozen, Point Blank, and The Professionals. In 1966, Marvin beat out some acting legends to win the best actor Oscar for Cat Ballou.

While those were his biggest films, Marvin turned down many of the most iconic roles in film history including Jaws and Dirty Harry. It would have been interesting to see how Marvin looked as some of these characters. It very well may have led to more Oscars for the actor.
