ASHOK RAMCHANDER. Regarded by many as the King of Chutney, South African born, Ashok Ramchander, will always be remembered for his dynamic personality on stage. Whilst he has left an indelible mark on his audiences as a Chutney singer, Ashok’s early career in music was regular contemporary Bollywood music and devotional songs. Ashok started his career at a very young age and was a popular artist at many stage events. He performed with Vishnu sounds in his early years and later formed Geet Mala with Ashok Sewpaul and Paul Sewdayal. Geeth Milan was his next regular group and under the leadership of Avish Ramkissoon, many songs of Ashoks songs were recorded. At the height of his career, he was a regular feature with the Tansen Nepaul Showband and toured together on many road shows. He will always be remembered for bringing explosive energy onto any stage that he performed on. He was a very dedicated musician and even with difficulties that life threw at him, he always managed to bounce back into action. His passing away has left a void in our industry and one that will be difficult to fill. Ashok’s life will be celebrated every time we hear his music. The song featured here is a popular South African Zulu song which is then sung in a chutney style in hindi.

“Chutney music” is a term we use for Bhojpuri influenced music which has its roots in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. You will find this Hindi dialect and style of music in Mauritius, South Africa, the Fiji Islands, Suriname and Trinidad.
