A new study led by University of Richmond biology professor Jonathan Richardson and published recently in the journal ‘Science Advances’ reveals a strong connection between rising rat populations in cities across the globe and key environmental factors such as warming temperatures and urban expansion.
By analyzing public complaints and inspection data from 16 cities worldwide, Richardson and his research team identified a significant link between rat numbers and three major aspects of the urban environment: human population density, urbanization, and climate change.
The findings indicate that 11 out of the 16 cities examined, including Washington D.C., New York, and Amsterdam, experienced notable increases in rat populations. In contrast, only three cities, including Tokyo and New Orleans, saw declines.
The study also highlights that cities experiencing higher temperature increases over time tend to have more substantial rat population growth. Additionally, urban areas with denser human populations and higher levels of urbanization reported greater surges in rat numbers. These trends pose considerable challenges for municipalities and pest management professionals, requiring them to integrate these environmental factors into their control strategies...
