Facing a supply shortage, the ADF delivered critical supplies by air drop to Mawson Station Antarctica as part of Operation Southern Discovery.

The ADF provided air mobility support assisting in the resupply of the expeditioners for the winter season. A RAAF C-17A Globemaster took on stores at Hobart, before departing for RAAF Base Pearce in Western Australia. The Globemaster then completed a round-journey of over 10,000km, from RAAF Base Pearce to Mawson research station, undertaking air-to-air refuelling from a RAAF KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport over the Southern Ocean. Operation Southern Discovery is the ADF's contribution to the Department of Climate, Energy, the Environment and Water-led activity in the Antarctic Region as part of the Australian Antarctic Program.
