On this Ash Wednesday, we begin the season of Lent by looking at the biblical language behind ashes and repentance. What do the Hebrew word apar (dust/ashes), the Greek sakkos (sackcloth), and metanoia (repentance) teach us about humility and conversion?

Drawing from the Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament and the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, we explore how outward signs of repentance in Scripture point toward something deeper, not merely ritual, but a genuine turning of the heart and a new relationship with God.

We’ll also reflect on historic Christian practices of Lent, prayer, fasting, and care for those in need, and close with a prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours as we begin this journey together.
