Water Protesters Clash With Police in Sainte-Soline France

On March 25, 2023 tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Sainte-Soline, France to protest against 'mega-basins' (water reservoirs) a highly controversial method of water storage used in agricultural farming.

Mega-basins have long been criticized by environmentalists for their negative impacts on the environment and emission of greenhouse gasses. Many local farmers also oppose the project on the grounds that the infrastructure only benefits a “handful of agro-industrialists.”

The protesters marched to Sainte-Soline where they were greeted by a contingent of over 3000 French riot police. Clashes soon erupted between the two sides with police firing tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd.

Protesters responded with their own projectiles of rocks, fireworks and molotov cocktails, and set a number of police vehicles on fire. Over 200 protesters and police were reported injured, with one police officer and two of the protesters reported to be in critical condition.
