It will make the same sounds whether you put it in a BB unit or an R series unit, so it’ll work no matter which you get. Also, for those wondering, the personality chips sold in the Droid Depot are compatible with the prebuilt R2-D2 and prebuilt BB-8 sold in the Droid Depot.
