Описание к видео Wael Dahdouh on the heavy price paid by Palestinians journalists in Gaza

For veteran Palestinian journalist Wael Dahdouh, who is Gaza bureau chief for Al Jazeera, his conviction in journalism has always been a driving force in his life.

In an exclusive interview with The New Arab, he describes how he cannot live just for his personal or family’s interests – there are also those of his community, his people. But few journalists in the world have paid as high a price for persisting with their mission as Wael Dahdouh.

Israeli airstrikes have killed several members of his immediate family: his wife, daughter, grandson, niece, and nephew. An Israeli drone strike also wounded Dahdouh himself and killed his colleague Samer Abudaqa. Then his son Hamza, also a journalist, was killed alongside a colleague after an Israeli missile struck the car they were travelling in.

Each and every time tragedy struck, Dahdouh returned to work to report from the ground. Yet in the almost 18 months since he left Gaza to have his wounds treated, Israel’s targeting of journalists appears only to be growing in intensity and brazenness.

We met him during a visit in London at the Amnesty UK HQ to discuss journalism as a mission, surviving personal tragedy, and exposing Israel's genocide in Gaza.
