William B. Shires (June 9, 1858-January 29,1926), who preformed and recorded as Billy Golden, was an American blackface comic and singer who was a popular recording artist between the 1890’s and the 1910’s. He recorded “Turkey in the Straw” in 1891 for Columbia Records. Turkey in the straw is a well-known American folk song dating from the early 19th century. The first part of the song’s tune may be derived from the ballad “My grandmother lived on Yonder Little Green” which was a derivative of the Irish ballad”The old Rose Tree.” Originally a tune for fiddle players, it was popularized in Minstrel Shows during the late 1820’s and early 1830’s by blackface performers, notably George Washington Dixon and Bob Farrell.

This is a Victor recording from 1906.
