Celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Today at Fir Park, we’re proud to welcome fans from Motherwell and Livingston as we mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities — a global celebration of inclusion, dignity and the right of disabled people to participate fully in every aspect of life, including football.

For the second year running, this special matchday has been organised jointly by The Well Society and the Motherwell FC Disabled Supporters Association (DSA), working alongside Motherwell FC to champion accessibility and ensure every supporter feels seen, valued and supported.

Why this day matters

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is recognised worldwide as a moment to highlight progress, challenge barriers and reaffirm our commitment to equality. At Motherwell FC, this aligns with our long-standing belief that football should be open to all — regardless of ability, background or circumstance.

Our DSA, one of the first of its kind in Scottish football, continues to play a vital role in shaping how Fir Park supports disabled fans and their carers: improving accessibility, influencing policy, advising on facilities and working hand-in-hand with the club and Well Society to drive positive change.

A message from Motherwell FC’s Manager

As we welcome fans to Fir Park today, Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou shares a powerful message for every supporter taking part in this celebration

“Football is for everyone. Played by everyone. Enjoyed by everyone. Some have been lucky enough to play it. Others might not be able to due to their disability. But still they fall in love with the game. Today we celebrate all of you who despite the challenges you have been given support us every week and contribute to our community. You are our heart and soul. May your love for the game and Motherwell FC last forever. Thank you for your support!”

What’s happening today

Across this afternoon’s meeting with Livingston, fans will see a range of activities designed to celebrate disabled supporters and the carers who make matchdays possible:

Pre-match Warm welcome and flag distribution across the stands supported by The Well Society and DSA volunteers.

Martin Grey’s match day programme interview with DSA members Emilie, Norman, Stephen, Henry and Heather.

Team line-ups read by DSA reps from both teams. Mascots from both clubs - including Joshua Taylor and Declan Martin from our own DSA

First-team warm-up shirts supporting International Day of Persons with Disabilities, to be signed and shared with disabled supporters

During the match Stadium-wide messaging on inclusion, accessibility and the role of carers

Half-time on-pitch interview with accessibility champion Jon Attenborough, reflecting on his journey around all 42 SPFL grounds with his guide dog Harry.

These moments reflect what makes Motherwell unique: community, compassion and the belief that football is at its best when everyone is included.

A message from Martin Grey, The Well Society

“As we mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Motherwell FC, The Well Society and our Disabled Supporters Association are standing together to champion accessibility, dignity and the right for every fan to enjoy their football experience.

“This matchday isn’t just about the action on the park. It’s about celebrating every supporter, every story and everything that makes Motherwell FC a club for everyone.”
