When it comes to preparing for anal sex, it's totally okay to be nervous. There's plenty of misinformation out there which paints it as messy, painful and even dangerous which can make the most adventurous of us seriously stressed out. Keep in mind that if anal sex doesn't sound like it's for you, there is no problem with giving it a miss - nobody should be pressuring you. If it is something you're keen to do, there are lots of things you can to do to ensure your first time is enjoyable and as safe as possible. To give you some pointers, we've written up a guide on how to prepare for anal sex.

First thing's first: honest, clear boundaries and communication are necessary whenever you try something new in the bedroom. Yet we also know that there are plenty of specific things to keep in mind when it comes to butt stuff - which is why we got in touch with sexpert and b-Vibe founder Alicia Sinclair to give us the anal sex lowdown.

Before we get started, let's have a little chat about safety. When it comes to unprotected anal sex between someone with a penis and someone with a vagina and uterus, there is admittedly less of a pregnancy risk than when having unprotected vaginal sex. However, you need to remember that if semen or precum spills into the vagina or vulva during any sexual activity there is a potential for conception - so during anal sex make sure you are using some kind of contraception to prevent any surprises. On the STI front, anal sex actually carries more of a risk than other types of sexual activity as the lining of the anus is thin and can easily be damaged, so make sure that you are using a condom to protect all parties. When it comes to strap-ons, make sure that they are thoroughly cleaned between uses (especially with different partners) and/or slide a condom on them to make sure everyone is safe and protected.

Finally, keep in mind that these tips work for anyone with a bum, regardless of partner or gender identity - whether they have a penis, or plan to wear a strap-on for penetration.
