This week, we feature a beautiful two year-old Shiro Utsuri koi carp, that featured on the Mitchkoi website a couple of month's ago.

Many people get confused when looking at a Shiro Utsuri, believing that it is a white based koi, with black markings. This however is the complete opposite; all of the Utsuri family, including Hi Utsuri, Shiro Utsuri and Kin-Ki Utsuri are black based fish with red, white and metallic yellow/orange markings respectively.

The black on this fish gives it a 'checker-board' effect, contrasting beautifully with the clean white overlay. The head pattern is very classic of a Shiro, and makes it look very elegant and graceful. Motoguru is a great characteristic of any Utsurimono and this koi boasts strong black in the finnage.

Utsurimono is the family name of the Shiro (white), Hi (fire/red) and Kin-Ki (yellow) Utsuri, and translates to 'reflections' - this can be seen in the symmetry of the pattern on both sides of the koi.

A Shiro Utsuri is one of the few koi carp varieties that can compete with GoSanke for the classic Grand Champion koi awards.
