The Soor is a river in eastern Belgium passing through a tunnel to flow into Lake Gileppe.
The Soor tunnel, a tunnel measuring 2,478 m and 2.30 m in diameter, was dug between the Soor and Lake Gileppe in order to significantly increase the lake's harvesting area (nearly 80,000 m³ per day) .

This tunnel has a tragic history.
Around 1950, it was decided to increase the water supply to the Gileppe dam to reduce the water shortages which were worrying the wool industries in the Verviers region.
It was then decided to dig a 2.5 km tunnel to bring the waters of the Soor basin to Lake Gileppe.

The work lasted two and a half years and was marred by two accidents.
The first was the death of the chief miner at the start of the work.
The second caused the death of 7 people on July 8, 1952, when at the end of their working day, 6 workers, one Belgian and five Italians, entered the tunnel to return towards the Soor, but a storm occurred. triggers outside.

The waters of the river quickly swelled and flooded the tunnel under construction.
The six men were found dead near Trou Malbrouck.
During rescue operations, a crane driver died after falling into a shaft, bringing the total number of victims of the disaster to 7 and the number of deaths occurring during tunnel work to 8.
