Happy International Women’s Day! Film editing might not seem like an intriguing technical aspect for a casual movie watcher, but it’s an important part of the filmmaking process. A movie with a great script and direction may not reach its full potential without good editing. This is why modern directors place great importance on editors, and most successful directors have their own regular editors.

What does film editing have to do with International Women’s Day? Back when films were becoming popular, male directors usually enlisted the help of women, often in their families, to assist with the tedious and low-paying job of cutting and joining film reels. When male figures like D.W. Griffith began emphasizing the editing function of cinema, the perception of editing changed, and the editor was born.

Throughout history, women have played a significant role in film editing. Margaret Booth, Viola Lawrence, Dorothy Arzner, Dede Allen, and Sally Menke are just a few examples of influential female editors. Menke edited all of Quentin Tarantino’s films and was hired because he wanted a woman who would “nurture” both him and his movie, rather than “shove their agenda or win their battles with me.”

Many male directors have trusted women editors with what audiences might see as masculine material, such as “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Jaws,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” “Slapshot,” “Raging Bull,” “Goodfellas,” “Reservoir Dogs,” and “Mad Max Fury Road.”

Renu Saluja was one of the first recognized woman editors in Bollywood who edited some of the finest films ever, including “Ardh Satya” and “Bandit Queen.” Today, Joi McMillon is a role model for young Black women, having become the first Black woman to be nominated for an Oscar for her work on “Moonlight.”

On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the countless contributions that women have made to the world of film editing, and we look forward to seeing more women breaking barriers and making their mark in the industry.
