ആറ്റുകാൽ ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ കുത്തിയോട്ടം എന്ന ചടങ്ങാണ് ഇപ്പോൾ എല്ലായിടത്തും ചർച്ചാ വിഷയം. ആറ്റുകാൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ മാത്രമല്ല ഇത്തരത്തിൽ ഒരു ചടങ്ങുള്ളത്. തെക്കൻ കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊക്കെ കുത്തിയോട്ടം എന്ന അനുഷ്ഠാനമുണ്ട്. മലയാള മാസം കുംഭത്തിൽ ആണ് ഈ അനുഷ്ടാനം നടത്തപ്പെടാറുള്ളത്.
കുട്ടികളെ മുറിവേൽപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുള്ള ചടങ്ങാണ് ഇതെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടാണ് ഈ അനുഷ്ഠാനത്തെ ചിലർ പ്രാകൃതമായി കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. കുത്തിയോട്ടത്തിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്ന കുട്ടികളുടെ അരയിൽ സ്വർണ്ണം കൊണ്ടോ വെള്ളി കൊണ്ടോ നിർമ്മിച്ച ചരട് കെട്ടുന്ന സമ്പ്രദായമാണ് വിവാദത്തിന് വഴിവച്ചത്. ശരീര ഭാഗത്ത് മുറിവേൽപ്പിച്ചു കൊണ്ടാണ് ഇങ്ങനെ ചരട് കെട്ടുന്നത് എന്നാണ് വിമർശകരുടെ വാദം. എന്നാൽ ചരടു കെട്ടുമ്പോൾ കുട്ടികൾക്ക് വേദനിക്കാറില്ലെന്നാണ് മറുവാദം. ചൂരൽ കുത്ത് എന്നാണ് ഈ ചടങ്ങ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. പണ്ടുകാലത്ത് സ്വർണ്ണ ചരടുകൾക്ക് പകരം ചൂരലുകൾ ആയിരുന്നു കെട്ടിയിരുന്നത്.
ഇനി കുത്തിയോട്ട അനുഷ്ടാനം എങ്ങനെയാണെന്ന് നോക്കാം. കുത്തിയോട്ട അനുഷ്ഠാനം നടകുന്ന ദിവസത്തിന് ഏഴ് ദിവസം മുൻപേ ചടങ്ങുകൾ ആരംഭിക്കും. പന്തലിട്ട് ദേവി സ്ഥാനം ഒരുക്കുകയാണ് ഇതിനായി ആദ്യം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഈ പന്തലിൽ ആലില, മാവില, കവുങ്ങിൻ പൂക്കുല, കുരുത്തോല എന്നിവ തൂക്കി അലങ്കരിക്കും. ഇവിടെ വച്ചാണ് കുത്തിയോട്ടത്തിന് പങ്കെടുക്കുന്ന കുട്ടികളെ പരിശീലിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.
വാദ്യമേളങ്ങളും ആര്പ്പുവിളിയും കുരവയും നിറഞ്ഞ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിലാണ് ചൂരല് കുത്തുന്നത്. ചൂരല് കുത്തിയ കുട്ടികളെ ഘോഷയാത്രയായി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ട് പോകും. വാദ്യങ്ങളുടെ അകമ്പടിയോടെ നൃത്തം ചെയ്തു കൊണ്ടാണ് കുട്ടികള് ക്ഷേത്ര സന്നിധിയില് എത്തുന്നത്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് മൂന്ന് പ്രദക്ഷിണം വെക്കും. തുടര്ന്ന് ദേവിയുടെ മുന്നില് എത്തിയാല് ചൂരല് ഊരി സമര്പ്പിക്കുന്നു.
ആറ്റുകാൽ ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം, ചെട്ടികുളങ്ങര ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം എന്നിവയാണ് കുത്തിയോട്ടത്തിന് പേരുകേട്ട ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ. ലക്ഷങ്ങൾ ചിലവ് വരുന്ന വഴിപാടാണ് കുത്തിയോട്ടം. കുത്തിയോട്ട പരിശീലനം മുതൽ കുത്തിയോട്ടം വരെയുള്ള എല്ലാ ചിലവുകളും വഴിപാട് കാരൻ വഹിക്കണം.
