A key component of my public safety platform in my campaign for City Council, is improving the city's continuum of care for sexual assault survivors.

Sexual assault occurs every 68 seconds in the United States. In the aftermath of a sexual assault, the survivor's body becomes part of the crime scene. A medical professional can examine a survivor's entire body for DNA evidence left behind by the perpetrator. This is if the survivor reports the assault to the police. Physical evidence recovery kits, or rape kits, preserve physical evidence and may contain DNA evidence that can be used to prevent and solve future sexual assaults.

In accordance with Bill 25 - 0348 Ensuring Safe Forensic Evidence Handling for Sexual Assault Survivors Amendment Act of 2023, the Department of Forensic Sciences, in collaboration with the District of Columbia Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners Program, must develop and implement a protocol for receiving and storing anonymous kits. This includes developing a notification system for anonymous kits. This notates whether kits are received by mail or delivery, documents the chain of custody, and maintains survivor anonymity.

You can play an important role in protecting survivors and holding perpetrators accountable. Please sign and send a letter to city council requesting these important safety improvements.
