While it lacks the speed of the arcade, the Master System port of Irem's classic arcade shooter is pretty good. The majority of features from the coin-op are present and correct, and, sprite flicker aside, the visuals are quite impressive as well.

My main reason for checking out R-Type, however, is it's one of the few games to support the Master System FM synth module. It probably doesn't sound so impressive today, but back then, I can imagine the FM music being a decent upgrade over the original chiptune melodies.
