Burping a baby is a routine part of feeding to help release any air swallowed during feeding, which can cause discomfort and gas. I always tell my families there is no wrong way to burp a baby as long as you help the baby get out the gas. Burping helps prevent fussiness and reduces the risk of spitting up or colic. Some babies may need to be burped more frequently than others, and it’s typically recommended to burp them halfway through and at the end of a feeding. There is no air in the breast, so unless baby is showing signs of discomfort, they may not have big burps between sides or even at the end of feeding.

There are several ways I teaching burping:
1. Over the shoulder (least favorite, you tend to wear your baby’s spit up and you can see their face)
2. On your lap, palm of your hand on their chest with finger and thumb by their jaw. Lean them slightly forward and pat their lower back
3. Have their butt on your chest, facing up, palm of your hand holding their shoulders and cradling their head. Pat their lower back
4. Stir them like a spoon in a pot (shown in this video). It can be effective without causing as much spit up as patting their back
