The longest hill climb in the Kosciuszko Killer Hard Enduro! It's the Kosciuszko Killer, Australia's newest and possibly toughest extreme enduro yet. This is just a lap of the prolog track, and along the way I'll give some dodgy riding tips for the terrain in case you decide to do this event next year. And you should, intermediate riders will get around the bronze loop okay some basic hill climb and traction skills under their belt. But first getting there! Bit of a road trip with 1600km but man the scenery is worth it as you get closer to the Snowy Mountains. A very scenic part of Australia that is home to Kosciuszko Killer Hard Enduro and most of our ski fields and also our highest peak, Mt Kosciusko. I'll stop up here to regroup. I want to film Scott's humiliation with trying to wrestle a little 200cc two stroke up this climb. This is a killer climb for the bronze and silver classes. Plenty of guys struggled here so here are a few tips. Momentum is critical. Too many riders went too fast, got out of shape then stopped and had trouble starting again. Keep a consistent speed within your skill level. This private property is just outside the national park but provides great views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Enough travel stuff, let's ride. I'm following Scotty out for the prolog lap of the Kosciuszko Killer Hard Enduro. This is seven kilometres and is essentially half of the 14km track for the main event tomorrow. Next, always keep the rear wheel weighted! See our body positioning vid for how to do this when standing. And when sitting you should be toward the rear of the seat. Quite a few guys did this but kept looping out because they were dropping the clutch or revving too much. The idea is you have four hours to punch out your fastest lap, which determines the starting order tomorrow. I'm not actually competing in the Kosciusko Killer hard enduro, I'm just a marshal so I get to film and help out anyone in trouble. I veer off to see if this guy is okay. It must be tough ahead, if there are guys returning to the pits already. A bit dusty and only one minute in most of us silver class riders take a wrong turn on end up on the gold class climb. I stop next to Scott so we can regroup in the Kosciusko Killer hard enduro. Time to back track. Interesting that Jeff didn't realise he was on the gold track and got almost to the top before someone told him to turn around and get back on the silver track for the Kosciusko Killer hard enduro. The key to traction on loose rocky climbs is plenty of clutch slipping to smooth out the power, and not many revs. Conserve your energy. It is tempting to speed up a lot when it's not steep, but you need to save your energy for the hard bits. Too many riders went out hard and were exhausted or had arm pump within minutes. We are coming to the hard part now, so we'll get to see whether guys are using good traction skills or not. The clutch becomes an extension of your throttle. If you stop, first check under your bike to see if there are rocks that your rear wheel will spin on. Then do a controlled drop of the clutch with a bounce on your seat. This gives you extra traction and avoids digging a hole that your bike won't climb out of. You don't need a lot of revs, just a well timed bounce on the seat. What else? Whether you are standing or sitting, paddling with one leg helps to keep your balance in rocky terrain. Don't put too much weight on your leg though, as otherwise you deweight the rear wheel and will lose traction. Gentle dabs with your feet are the way to go. Into enduro riding?
