History in the Making! Nearly 60 years after racing along the mainlines of the Union Pacific system, UP "Big Boy" #4014 triumphantly returns to the Overland Route in 2019! The preparations for this moment date back to 2014, when Union Pacific transported the 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive from the RailGiants museum in Pomona, California, to their steam shops in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Many said it would be impossible to restore such a complex and old steam locomotive, but the fine folks at the UP Steam Program proved their thoughts otherwise once again!

Therefore, in preparation for the highly anticipated "Great Race to Ogden" with UP #844 this weekend (May 4 & 5th, 2019), Union Pacific steam officials ran a test run of 4014 on the evening of Thursday May 2nd, 2019. This is the the first test run of the newly restored Big Boy on the mainline under its own steam power.

The UP Steam crew ran the 4014 from Cheyenne to Greeley without any major problems. While it did run later than anticipated with low light, I managed to get 2 shots of the Big Boy around the Cheyenne area.

This is only just a preview of what's to come, stay tuned for "The Great Race to Ogden!"    • The Great Race to Ogden! UP 4014 "Big...
