"19th century US is a very unique case: no significant natural enemies and a vast expanse of undeveloped territory. Every time the chaotic banking system created a speculative real estate bubble ( almost every single decade) it wiped out smallholders and average people. The reason it didn't blow the country apart was that those who lost their homes and land could get in a wagon and find new land for free. No such luxury after the 19th century."

"I don't disagree, the Lincoln greenbacks were a great idea. Not sure the US could have risen to international prominence with that since the key to empire is a centralized global financial system, but I am no fan of empires anyway, All I am saying is that I am not convinced other system is possible for the current level of social development. Humanity is just not ready for a utopia and central banks do have a role in calming down economic storms if managed right. Problem today: they r not!"
